SOAPST

Ralph Waldo Emerson has written a speech about education. His speech is called "from Education". He has many arguments and in his speech each argument was emphasized. The SOAPST for this speech is: subject-education, reformation and philosophy; occasion- American Scholar 1800's; audience- readers do the magazine, educators, and parents; purpose is to persuade and educate; speaker is Ralph Waldo Emerson; and his tone during the speech is philosophical, confident, professional, and considerate. Emerson's main point in his speech is that education should not be taught with just only a teacher. Students should start learning with observations, nature, and experiences. He also stated that parents should not force their children into the careers they do not want to pursue. Children should find their own future and pursue their own dreams and goals.
This article can be effective and ineffective. It can be effective because this essay will teach parents not to pressure their children into the field the parents want their children to pursue. Children will be inspired by his methods of education and try it out through experience. This speech can also be ineffective because he states that children should not attend and find their own path through life. School is important to attend because by going through different subjects students can see what subject they are interested in and love learning, and they can pursue in the future.
In this piece of literature SOAPST helps us understand the main key points he is trying to make in his essay. SOAPST helps us understand the context more thoroughly. The SOAPST shows the time period that it was written in and the type of audience the author is trying to target. It shows what he is trying to do and if he has successfully persuaded the audience.

Ebola Guidelines

Ebola is talked about every single day. It can shut down one's body and can be deadly. It is easy to become infected. Nurses and doctors are easily being infected because they treat Ebola patients. There was much criticism from healthcare workers and relatives of an Ebola-infected patient. U.S centers for Disease Control and Prevention have announced new guidelines for nurses and doctors to wear to protect themselves from becoming infected. These new guidelines eliminate areas of bare skin. They also need to have intensive training in the donning and removal of equipment. They now have provided a specialist who sits at a designated area in the hospital observing procedures and ensuring that the guidelines are properly followed through. Exposure of skin was making the nurses and doctors nervous of treating people with Ebola. Now with the new suits, they are confident in their work. Health officials gave criticism to U.S medical workers and politicians who we're complaining that the existing guidelines were too loose, and would expose them to Ebola. Doctors are beginning to buy their own suits out of nervousness. This issue came up because Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and infectious Disease, had taken a look at the airwaves. He concluded that two nurses in Dallas have been infected by exposure to a now-dead-Ebola-infected patient, Thomas Eric Duncan. Frieden had concluded that maybe these nurses had failed to follow the guidelines. Officials at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas stated that they did follow the CDC guidelines. Some hospitals do not follow these guidelines and the patients breathing tubes and suction instruments may expose the nurses and doctors to the patient’s body fluids. The new guidelines require specialists to wear specialized breathing masks. These breathing masks help protect the workers from fluid splatter. These guidelines also recommend double gloves, boot covers, respirators, disposable face shields, and surgical hoods. CDC would be offering training to healthcare personnel to teach them how to handle the protective gear and to be Ebola free.
This article is important to read because it shows how doctors and patients who have Ebola are quickly infecting nurses. There are new guidelines by specialists that have created protective gear for specialists to wear to prevent infection. Special monitors would be placed for specialists to watch what is happening while treating Ebola patients. By watching doctors and nurses treating these patients, they will come up with new ways to lessen infections. This is an important and deadly disease, and we need to be extra careful.

Education

Nelson Mandela once quoted, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. The definition of education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.  Education is extremely important for everyone to have. Education sets up the base for people to survive in the world. Education is made up of different branches. The most common way for someone to have an education is through school. School has a wide range of resources that teach students education. There is a certain extent to which school can provide a person’s education. It is important for someone to attend school but a school cannot teach everything that someone needs to know. Education is such a broad subject that it will take years to learn and process in the brain. School only offers an extent that students need to know to find a job in the future and survive. Education can be learned through much more like traveling, visiting different types of museums, life experiences, and etc. It is not only schools that manage to teach education. Education will be filled throughout our whole lives; it will never stop. Education can be learned anywhere someone goes. It is still important for someone to attend school in order to receive the education they need to survive. Most people do have an education; they need to use it wisely in order to succeed in anything they dream of.

Vaccines for Children

“Which state does the best job of vaccinating kids? Mississippi”

Some communities are in danger of losing herd immunity. Having enough people vaccinated will protect the people that do not want to have these vaccine shots for medical reasons. Experts say that children need to have two doses of the MMR vaccine to maintain herd immunity to measles. Most states allow parents not to allow their children to vaccinate because of religious reasons, and dozens allow parents to skip them for “philosophical” reasons.
There are many diseases in the world like measles, diphtheria, and whooping cough. To not become infected with these diseases, children need to be vaccinated. The new federal data shows that Mississippi is keeping the vaccinations for children mandatory. They are the top nation who is keeping track of children that are being vaccinated. 99.7% of Mississippi’s children have enrolled in kindergarten last year and received MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella, DTaP vaccine that prevents diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, which is known as whooping cough. Varicella is a vaccine that protects against chicken pox. Mississippi had the best showing among forty-nine states that reported vaccination data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 0.1% of kindergartners who have started school signed a waver to not be vaccinated. Colorado had the lowest vaccination rates. Across the country the median rate of MMR vaccination for kindergartners in the 2013-2014-school year was 94.7%.
This article is important to read because it warns parents how important it is to have their children vaccinated. It states different types of vaccines and how it can affect a child if they are not vaccinated. Children especially going to school or starting school need to have their shots.

Community Service

Although students do not put time aside to volunteer, it is necessary because it will benefit them to reach their future career goals. Volunteering is an opportunity for high school students to get a glimpse of different types of careers in the real world. Community Service is not only giving back to the people, but it also makes the student a well-rounded individual. It is essential that students volunteer in their communities and take in unforgettable experiences that later help them make decisions on their career path. It is important for students to have a glimpse of different types of volunteering opportunities because they will get a chance to experience different environments. A student volunteering is like someone working on their daily job. They will get a feel of what it is like working for a certain office, hospital, or even an animal shelter. It may be a deciding factor of what field the student may want to look into the future.
Prueter, a young volunteer, has decided to spend his time with the elderly at an assisted-living home. He spends his time talking to the elderly, taking care of them, cooking, gardening, and playing games with residents. He makes the residents feel loved and cared for. Prueter fell in love with his volunteering job and is quoted in (Source 3) “His dream job, he says, is working where he volunteers now.” Prueter through experience loved his volunteering and turned it into his job. Students should take Prueter’s actions into consideration because it will help students be involved with different ideas about what can be their future job.

Losing a Sense of Smell

“Losing a sense of smell may be harbinger of death, study finds”

Losing a sense of smell is a strong predictor that death may be near. It can also be an early alert about some serious health problems. It was published this week in journal PLOS One that those who fail a smelling test were likely to die within five years. Losing a sense of smell is a factor that this may cause some serious warning for health problems. It does not cause death but it may be a factor for major problems in the future. In a study researchers gave a smelling test to about 3,000 people between the ages of fifty seven to eighty five. Volunteers were presented with five odors: peppermint, fish, orange, rose and leather. They asked the volunteers to identify each smell. Researchers have provided four possible answers for each scent for the volunteers to choose one. Five years later researchers have checked back with the same volunteers. Around 40% of the people failed the test. They either identified as no smell or picked the incorrect scent. That is being compared with the 19% of those who correctly identified two or three smells. Results were adjusted for age, gender, race, overall health, and socioeconomic status. Smell test was still a strong predictor of five year mortality. It was stronger predictor than emphysema, cancer, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, or congestive heart failure.  It is still unclear how sense of smell is related to mortality. The study also did not examine the causes of death of volunteers who passed away.
This article is important to read because it shows new ways of how losing smell can cause health problems. The audience that read this article can see how important losing scent can be. Researchers have done many tests and experiments to see how losing smell can affect a person with their life or other health problems.
